Bau Bau, part of Indonesia’s Southeast Sulawesi group, is situated on the mountainous island of Butung, commonly referred to as Buton. The island was once a post for slave trade and piracy, ruled by the Sultanate of Buton from the 14th century until 18th century when the Dutch and Portuguese arrived. The Dutch took rule in 1908, teaching their superb boat-building skills to the people of the island, many of whom eventually sailed their vessels to settle on nearby islands. Most of the residents of the island today are part of the Buginese culture, proud Muslims who also follow the ancient traditions of their early ancestors.
